The New Mayor Pledges a 'New Era' for New York City in Inaugural Address
On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The new figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.
Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”
Steering by Socialist Convictions
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Blueprint
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:
- Universal childcare
- Free buses
- A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Challenges
The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past comments.
Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
